What is ITAR compliance?

ITAR stands for the International Traffic in Arms Regulations. These regulations are designed by the U.S. government to prevent sensitive military and defense technology from being exported without a license. The ITAR are stringent as they deal with matters of national security. The Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC), part of the U.S. Department of State, oversees the export and import of the articles described on the United States Munitions List (USML) which is in ITAR section 121.1. In order to comply with these laws, manufacturers should use inspection services that have been certified by an independent agency such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to be ITAR compliant inspection providers.

Why should designers, manufacturers, or distributors care about ITAR compliant inspection service?

By choosing an ITAR compliant inspection service, you can ensure that your product is not only safe, but also compliant with all necessary regulations. This can save you time and money by avoiding costly penalties or even recalls. There are criminal penalties or civil fines if a company is found in violation. Additionally, selecting an ITAR compliant inspection lab will help protect your brand image and reputation.

What industries might benefit from ITAR compliant inspection services?

If your company ships any goods containing ITAR-controlled technology out of the US, or receives any goods containing ITAR-controlled technology from another country, or designs or manufactures any machinery or equipment that might fall into this category, you should make ITAR compliant metrology services a part of your quality management system.

ITAR products are not classified by the end user, though. To be classified as ITAR, the origin of the article is taken into consideration (ie. civil or military) and its prevalent use. ITAR also controls the components going in to the final product as well as the technical data used for design, development, or testing of the product.

There are many different types of products that may require ITAR compliance:
  • Defense related equipment
  • Naval equipment
  • Imaging systems
  • Satellites
  • Missiles
  • Ammunition
  • Military electronics
  • Software
  • Automotive parts and equipment
  • Aerospace component
  • Medical devices and supplies
